- Fiber Artist
Biography
I create wool paintings. At least that is the short description.
I am a self taught fiber artist. I find my inspiration in images from nature. Rolling landscapes, the colors of fall, the peace of the winter woods, the beauty of a stand of birch, grazing sheep, cranes and the farm scenes are common themes.
My art is a blend of traditional artistic processes and felting which is an ancient process for creating textile. I “paint” a scene using fine layers of primarily wool and silk fibers. The fibers are layered, blended and applied in directional strokes similar to painting. Silks and other fibers are included to enhance the image or texture. When complete the fibers are felted together using water and friction. Felting causes the fibers to blend and mat together and in the process the art is transformed. Fibers shrink, curl, and interact with other fibers to create truly unique art. I am really fascinated by what happens when the art is transformed by the craft. How can I take a beautiful scene and capture the spirit, the beauty and the light in fiber understanding that the craft of felting will influence the outcome? At the intersection of the art and the craft there is serendipity-a degree of unpredictability. It is the unexpected that makes my art unique and that inspires me to continue to explore this medium.
I am member of the Madison Felter’s Guild, Madison Art Guild, Wisconsin Alliance of Artists and Craftspeople, the Association of Wisconsin Artists and the Wisconsin Visual Artists. My work has been displayed in the Miller Art Museum in Sturgeon Bay, Evergreen in Oshkosh, the Secura show at the Trout Museum and The High Street Gallery in Mineral Point. I also participate in member exhibits sponsored by various art associations and display my art in art fairs primarily in my home state of Wisconsin.
