Biography

Elizabeth uses pen and ink and acrylic paint to study the interplay between people and furniture. Exploring the way people arrange and interact with furniture, Winters often creates a story about individuals (real and imaginary) within the spaces she draws. In some instances, she invents scenes based on items that belong to her friends or family members. Other times, Elizabeth draws intriguing objects such as unusual lamps, tables, rugs, and quilts that she chooses to piece together to form a narrative.

One of the themes Elizabeth explores is the notion that furniture design and arrangement can bring us together or separate us. Furniture is an integral part of the human experience, capable of bringing us together or allowing solitude. Tables and chairs promise human interaction. Sofas are suited towards a unique dichotomy of interaction or solitude.

Winters received a BA in art education from Viterbo University in La Crosse, Wisconsin and a MA in art education and museum studies from University of Texas at Austin. She has taught art in school and community programs in Wisconsin and Texas and has worked at the San Antonio Museum of Art.
