Biography
I’ve been drawing with pencils for as long as I can remember. I liked being able to make everything look so smooth and so… nice. I did so relatively consistently until about two years ago: I was traveling, and only had a pen and notebook paper with me, and I had a serious itch to draw someone. So I started up, and as I went, I slowly realized something. Drawing in pen allowed me to connect to the texture of the face more than I’ve been able to before. I couldn’t smooth out all of the edges. The edges and creases remained, and made my drawings feel present and tangible.
Yes, drawing in pen is an unforgiving process, but that’s why so much realness comes out of it. There’s only drawing just what you see and moving forward. I found details in parts of a face that don’t even have names, and became more familiar with the shape/shading of a face than perhaps even that of my own. It has encouraged me to show up to the process and be present with my drawings and the subjects themselves, and I am beyond excited to see where this goes and to share it with others on the way.
