Biography
I have always loved nature: from ponds to oceans, from small hills to big mountains… with no exception, they impart their greatness, their beauty, or their silence. I have also been interested in artistic endeavors, but my educational background is in chemistry and biology. For over 25 years I worked, among other areas, on the molecular aspect of plants. Between work and family, I did not have much time for myself. However, in 2003, after a turning point in my life represented by cancer, I rediscovered myself and decided to focus on my artistic abilities.
Pressed flowers gave me a wonderful combination of nature and art. I started making simple compositions with pressed flowers, and evolved to creating larger paintings – going beyond a casual approach and developing as an artist. I have taken various general and pressed flower art courses, attended conferences, read many books, and developed new techniques. I have also taught pressed flower classes online.
I have been fortunate to participate in art shows, competitions, and exhibitions in the United States as well as Japan, China, and South Korea, and to receive recognition and awards. But the most rewarding aspect of my work has been having the opportunity to bring pressed flower art, which is less known in the US, to the attention of the public. I am now focusing on showcasing my art in Wisconsin, my home since May 2020.
Nature is always present in my work. Sometimes the flowers themselves inspire my design, to create the perfect harmony in a picture. Other times, a scene catches my attention and impresses me, so I aim to translate it into flowers. I also use these miracles of nature to artistically express my feelings, and create paintings that represent my ideas.
In my work, I use flowers that I collect from everywhere I go, as well as things that, at first glance, might not symbolize beauty: leaves that spent the winter covered by snow; peels from onions and bananas; straw, weeds, bark, and moss. I choose them to best represent what I want in a picture. In a way, I give them a new life. These are the paints I use, these are nature’s paints, with no two alike, making each piece unique.
